BREAK FREE FROM FEAR, WORRY, AND ANXIETY AS A CHRISTIAN MILLENNIAL.

Estimated reading time: 12 minutes

Are you battling fear, worry, and anxiety as a Christian millennial? Do you want to break free from fear, worry, and anxiety? Does it seem like an ever-ending cycle of struggling to break free? Have you reached a point where you have come to terms with it and cohabited with it? Globally, 1 in 13 people have anxiety, this is according to the Global Burden of Disease study.

As you can see, this is alarming. Although this is considered a norm to some extent, that is not God’s will for us. God wants us to live in His freedom and peace, free from every form of worry, fear, and anxiety. God wants you as His child to live in the realm of freedom and peace. You cannot experience peace and freedom when you are fearful are anxious. For you to break free from fear, worry, and anxiety, you need to decide that you are going to be free. It is exhausting living in anxiety and it is time for you to break free from it. Are you ready? Keep reading.

God sent us His Spirit to empower us to be confident and have faith, so God did not wire us to live in fear. Fear and anxiety are the devil’s plan to get you to agree with him. As a Christian, God has given you authority over everything that is not from Him and what you need to do is to take every thought captive that is contrary to God’s word. This simply means that in everything that is tormenting you, you have power over and it is time for you to take your power back.

Taking your power means taking dominion over everything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. God tells us in the book of 2 Corinthians that we have the power to take every thought captive. Let’s go ahead and see how we can get our power back.

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Definition of worry, fear, and anxiety.

According to Cambridge dictionary, worry is defined as to think about problems or unpleasant things that might happen in a way that makes you feel unhappy and frightened.

Fear is an unpleasant emotion or thought that you have when you are frightened or worried. ( Cambridge )

Anxiety is defined as Intense, excessive, and persistent worry and fears about everyday situations. ( Mayo Clinic )

How then do you take your power back and break free from fear, worry, and anxiety?

The first thing you have to know is that Jesus purchased for you this freedom at the cross and so your task is to receive it. Before He died he said that it is finished. He acknowledged He had paid the debt and wiped out every handwriting of requirement. You and I are debt-free. The enemy only has the power that we give him. See how easy it is? Anyway, what are the steps to take?

Acknowledge!

Before anyone can change their life, the first thing they usually do is acknowledge that they dislike the way they are living, and it is now time for them to change. Once you recognize you suffer from anxiety and acknowledge it, you now set yourself up for freedom. Acknowledging shines a light on the problem and when you do that, you allow God’s power to move in and through your situation. Hiding the problem only makes it worse because you give the enemy grounds to frustrate and torment you with it.

Acknowledging reveals the problem. And through exposure, God’s light can come in. And we all know when the light comes in, darkness has to flee. Light has the power to break chains and tear down strongholds. Also, it is when you acknowledge the problem that you can find a solution. This is because you will have a specific diagnosis that leads to the right medication.

Acknowledging also looks like you going to God and telling Him you need help and you can no longer continue living the way you currently are. When you come clean to God and honestly tell Him your worries, He will definitely show up for you and He will definitely help you out. God will never leave you high and dry, knowing that you need help from Him. He does not leave when the going gets tough. In fact, it is in your weakness that His strength and glory will manifest. So in your acknowledgment, you are telling God that you need His help and are being vulnerable with Him. As you acknowledge to God that you are anxious, you give Him room to move.

Remember, because of free will, God will never violate your wishes. Therefore, it is vital that you ask Him for help when you need it because you give Him access to your life and problems. He is the Solution. But He can only solve a problem that you hand to Him. He gave us dominion over the earth. And in His Sovereignty, He will only work through partnership with you and me.

Identify the root cause.

The best way to treat a wound is by finding the cause of it so that you can know the right treatment for it. The same case applies here. You need to know what first introduced these emotions so that you can know how to then, deal with them. It might not be easy to remember, and that is why you need the help of the Holy Spirit. Jesus did not leave us alone when He went to heaven. He sent us the Precious Holy Spirit to help us with all our weaknesses and He will always highlight the issues that you need to deal with. So when you ask Him to reveal to you the genesis of your fear or worry, He will surely do.

The Bible tells us in Jeremiah 33:3 that when we ask, God will reveal to us things that we do not know. Identifying the root of the problem can be something as small as an idea popping into your mind about an event that happened to you. It could be something someone said about you as a child. It could even be through your experiences as a child. Or thought that was etched in your mind. Either way, there is always a Genesis to everything and God wants to expose it. It is in God’s light that darkness is exposed. Ask Him to show you. The more you spend time with God the more He reveals the things that are hidden.

So just ask the Holy Spirit and He will. But I have to warn you that when He does, it will be an uncomfortable experience. The reason I am saying this is that when He highlights the moment, the emotions associated with the event will come flooding back and it will feel like you are going through the same event again. The first time the Holy Spirit will highlight it, the pain will seem unbearable and chances are you will want to shut it down. That is okay, too. What I want to encourage you to do is not shut it down completely. It is okay to take a break at the moment because of the magnitude. However, you should not run away from the pain. At some point, you will need to address the pain and situation through confrontation.

Be patient!

Go back to it repeatedly until the event no longer brings up negative emotions. And every time, invite Jesus to that event and ask Him to heal you from the negative emotion and instead allow His peace to flood your mind at that moment. Jesus is faithful and when you ask Him for healing, He will never deny you. It might not be instant as you would expect, but you can be sure that God will heal you because by His stripes you were healed and you can access His healing power.

The blind man at Bethsaida did not receive his sight instantly, and sometimes God will not give you instant healing. Sometimes He wants it to be gradual so that you can help others too because everything you go through is so that you can help others going through the same. So if you have not fully healed, I want to encourage you to trust the process and know that you will receive your healing and not only that, you will use the same tools that God will use to help others break free from fear as well.

As you go through the healing process to break free from fear, worry and anxiety celebrate the small wins. Do not focus so much on the end goal. Rather, enjoy the journey and celebrate the process. You will have hard days. And those days will make you question your healing journey. But remember it is a process and Rome was not built in a day.

As anxiety leaves, there will be a vacuum and now it is time to fill it with the truth of God’s word. When you experience anxious thoughts, speak the word of God. God says that you should not be anxious for anything. But in everything through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, take it all to God. And when you do that, His peace will flood your heart.

Stand on God’s promises.

God has not given you a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. The other thing is that God has also told you not to worry or fear and instead cast all your cares and burdens to Him for He cares for you. Worry will keep you paralyzed and so will fear. Look for scripture that speaks over the situation that is causing you to fear or have anxiety and speak what God says. What is causing the anxiety? Is it fear of failure, people, or death? Look for scripture that speaks to either of them.

So let us say that your fear is dying, a scripture that speaks on the same is Psalm 139: 16 and it says that even before you were born God planned out every day of your life and He has them all penned out in the book He wrote about you. So when the enemy tries to torment you with the fear of death, remind him that God is the one who planned it all out and that everything is written in your book of destiny, and you will get to fulfill it. Another example is Psalm 91: 16 which says that God will satisfy you with a full life and show you His salvation when you stay hidden in Him. This just goes to show you you have nothing to fear as God is in control and He’s got you!

Conclusion

It is possible for you to break free from fear, worry, and anxiety. You don’t have to stay stuck in the past. Trust God and invite Him into those ugly, anxious areas of your life. He is your Healer and creator. And it is in those deep places where He will create a masterpiece in and through you. You can overcome anxiety and live in the freedom that Jesus purchased for you on the cross.

Fear, worry, and anxiety are all from the devil. And the longer you hold on to them, the less confidence you will have in God. And also you cannot walk in the fullness of everything that God has for you. Decide today not to give the enemy space in your mind and instead choose to have the peace of God flood and overwhelm you.
When you do, you will experience His freedom and your life will be full of joy. What I mean is that even when the storms of life come, you will have peace because you know that God will carry you through it all. You are never alone.
