WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE.

Estimated reading time: 13 minutes

Have you found yourself telling God you can’t take it anymore? Do you feel like you have been more than patient and God is still not coming through for you? Have you had moments where you are more than ready to quit on God? Well, if you have then you are in good company. First off, not only because you are not alone. But because there are people in the Bible who got to that point.

Abraham.

Abraham did not outright tell God that he could not take it anymore. He simply told God that from the look of things, every promise God had made to him would benefit his servant, Eleazar. Abraham initially was excited when he got the promise from God. He even stepped out in faith and went to the land that God had promised him. He trusted God, but then, after a while, he got weary. Let’s check out the scripture that says so.

Abram said, “God, Master, what use are your gifts as long as I’m childless and Eliezer of Damascus is going to inherit everything?” Abram continued, “See, you’ve given me no children, and now a mere house servant is going to get it all.” Genesis 15:2‭-‬3 MSG

Can you imagine what it must have taken him to say that out loud? He was over the promise because it had taken so long. I love how the Message translation puts it. It expresses what Abraham was feeling at the moment. He was sick of the assurance of the promise.

Maybe you feel the same way today. Or maybe you have grown weary and can’t take it anymore. Maybe there are promises that God has spoken over your life that have taken too long to manifest. Or maybe you are following a path God called you to and you are yet to see the manifestation of the fruit. You know, initially, the step of faith is exhilarating.

But after a while, when the reality sinks in you begin to doubt. Especially when your surroundings contradict the very promise God has spoken over your life. Abraham did not understand how he would become the father of many nations, yet he had no heir. But that’s how God operates. Often, He gives us promises that seem too good to be true and impossible, too. Let’s not forget that Sarah was barren and both of them were well advanced in years. So it almost seemed impossible.

Could it be that Abraham thought that the promise would be possible if he had more children? Have you had moments when you think that the promise would only be practical if you got to such and such a place? Maybe God has promised that you would be a kingdom financier. And because you have heard people say that one has to diversify their income to create wealth. You think that you too should do the same. God does not need a multitude to get things done.

He works by a few a majority of the time. Take a look at the story of Gideon. God saved the Israelites with only 300 men. He had the number reduced from thousands to 300. In the natural, it did not even look possible. How were they going to defeat the rival army with only 300 men? But that’s how God does it. Abraham was at that point where the present circumstance prevented him from seeing what God could do.

Sarah.

Sarah, being Abraham’s wife knew that God had promised Abraham a child. But she too got to the point where she could not take it anymore. She decided to take matters into her own hands. Let’s take a look at the story.

Sarai, Abram’s wife, hadn’t yet produced a child. She had an Egyptian maid named Hagar. Sarai said to Abram, “God has not seen fit to let me have a child. Sleep with my maid. Maybe I can get a family from her.” Abram agreed to do what Sarai said. So Sarai, Abram’s wife, took her Egyptian maid Hagar and gave her to her husband Abram as a wife. Abram had been living for ten years in Canaan when this took place. He slept with Hagar, and she got pregnant. When Hagar learned she was pregnant, she looked down on her mistress. Genesis 16:1‭-‬4 MSG

Here we see a case of someone who had had enough of the waiting. And although she did not outright say that, her actions spoke loud enough. She had grown tired of waiting on God. She could not take it anymore. Is this you today? Have you grown weary in the waiting? Have the surrounding circumstances led you to believe that God will never come through for you?

Maybe you are tired of the endless assurance of the promise. All the dreams, visions, prophetic words, and inner knowing. Sarah was at that point. She was sick of hearing the promise and having to wait on God. And she did what any normal human being would. Take matters into her own hands. Child of God I would like to encourage you today if you have hit rock bottom. If you are tired of waiting, then this word is for you.

What to do when you can’t take it anymore.

And to get the encouraging words, if you can’t take it anymore, I want us to look at the same Biblical characters. Let’s look at the book of Genesis.

God visited Sarah exactly as he said he would; God did to Sarah what he promised: Sarah became pregnant and gave Abraham a son in his old age, and at the very time God had set. Abraham named him Isaac. When his son was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him just as God had commanded. Genesis 21:1‭-‬4 MSG

This scripture is such a beautiful depiction of God’s faithfulness. This is because even after they tried it their way, God did not discount their promise. He did bless Ishmael too, just because he came from Abraham. Isn’t that wonderful? But that’s not the story for today. So what lessons can we learn from this scripture that can encourage us while we are waiting on God and weariness seems to be the norm of the day? How do you get out of your I can’t take it anymore feeling?

God’s faithfulness is based on His character and not yours.

This will help you in moments where weariness overwhelms you and guilt tries to come in. You know this faith journey is not always smooth. There are moments when things get so tough that no matter how much you try to have faith, it’s not evident. You get to the point where even the mustard seed faith seems like too much of an ask. You are simply exhausted. For Abraham to get to that point where he told God that the promise would be immaterial, he had grown weary as weary gets. It is at this moment that you need to remind yourself of God’s character. can't take it anymore

It is not about you. Nothing is based not on what you can do. Rather, it is about who He is. He never makes a promise that He can’t fulfill. He is true to His word and He can be trusted. Unfortunately, when you are in the middle of the valley, it’s difficult to trust that God would fulfill what He said. Especially as time goes by. As human beings, we are limited and rarely see past our noses.

It’s easy to imagine that the current season is all there will ever be. And that you will never get to the other side. But that is a lie from the pit of hell and you should denounce it. When God promises to do something, He puts everything in place to ensure that what He promises comes to pass. That is how His character comes to play. When you can’t take it anymore, focus on His character and His faithfulness. Let that encourage you to keep the faith and hold on. God is faithful and He will always fulfill what He promised you.

God will do exactly what He promised.

Even when Abraham tried to tell God to let Ishmael be the one to carry along the family name, God did not do that. He knew that He would give Abraham a son through Sarah. And that is exactly what He did. God did not get to the point where He changed His plans because Abraham and Sarah were old.

He gave both Abraham and Sarah, Isaac, the promised child, through Sarah. I know you can’t take it anymore. You have grown weary to where you are just over the whole promise. You have even become comfortable with mediocrity and have settled for less.

Today, let me encourage you with this and tell you that God will do exactly as He has promised you. It does not matter how impossible everything looks. If He said it, HE will do it. The Bible even clarifies that God did exactly what He promised Abraham He would do.

So rest assured that He will do it. If He did it for Abraham, why not you? He is not a respecter of persons. Rest in that promise. It is especially important to remember this in moments when you are weary and doubtful as it will help ignite your faith. And also it will eliminate hopelessness.

Oftentimes weariness comes because hopelessness gets into your mind. It comes because you have resigned yourself to thinking that it will never happen for you. Or that too much time has passed so you might have missed it.

But let me tell you this: you can never miss what God has for you. He will direct you and lead you to the path He has for you. He is the one who directs the pathway for a stream and He will do the same for you too. As you yield to Him, He will direct your steps and you will get to the place He promised you. The Israelites did not think they would ever get out of Egypt, but they did. And the same will be said for you.

“And to the angel (divine messenger) of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the Holy One, the True One, He who has the key [to the house] of David, He who opens and no one will [be able to] shut, and He who shuts and no one opens: Revelation 3:7 AMP

God has the power to shut and open doors. This should encourage you that nothing will stop Him from fulfilling what He promised you.

When you can’t take it anymore, remember that God has a set time for the fulfillment of your promise.

In Genesis 26, we see the Bible tells us that God did exactly what He promised at the time He had set. This is very key for you. It will help you in moments of weariness. You need to get to the realization that God works with timing. He has a set time for the fulfillment of the promise. You know, a while back I was listening to a sermon, and the preacher said something that stuck with me. She said that every promise God gives us is ours, to begin with. She said that

The fulfillment does not stem from our doing, but from being and you and I do not need to earn what’s already ours, to begin with. This helped me a lot and I hope it helps you too. God is not a man. This means that He will not tell you anything just to make you feel good. He tells you to encourage yourself. He wants you to trust in Him. God has set a time for fulfillment and it will come to pass when the time is right.can't take it anymore

You know weariness will cause you to get out of God’s ultimate will. Do not allow the enemy to lie to you and tell you that it will never happen to you. If God can open up the womb of Sarah, who was not only barren but also past the childbearing age, what can’t He do? If God can part the sea to make room for the Israelites to pass, then surely He will fulfill what He promised you. You are in His plan and He has not forgotten you.

The Israelites had been in bondage for 400+ years when God delivered them. And God will do as He promised to do.

Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life. Philippians 4:6‭-‬7 MSG

Conclusion.

I know you are tired and want to give up on God. But today I would like to encourage you to hold on. Go read the story of Abraham and see for yourself how God fulfilled what He promised him. Not one thing was left unfulfilled.

God does not need to work with a multitude for the fulfillment of a promise. He only needs you to say yes. A nation came from Abraham. And your promise will come from you. What has God promised you today? Child of God, I want you to know that God watches after every word to fulfill it.

Not one of His words will fall to the ground empty. His words are alive and living. This means that they hold so much power. It does not matter how long it has been.

As long as God spoke it, HE will bring it to Pass. Joseph must have grown weary of waiting for God to fulfill what He had shown him in a dream. It took more than 10 years for the dream to be fulfilled. But the truth is that it was fulfilled.

And now we get to see how Joseph stepped into the role God had for him. Throughout the Old Testament, we see prophecies of the coming Messiah. I am sure after a while the Israelites had become weary of listening and waiting on the promise. But yet again, when the time was right, God brought the fulfillment.

God sees you. He knows you are weary and want to give up. But today, He wants you to try again and give Him one more chance. Cast your net, beloved. Do not grow weary. He sees you and He understands. Turn to Jesus, He went through the waiting process.

He wasn’t released to walk into His purpose until He was 30 years old. So He knows it all. Tell Him what you feel and trust that He will not let you down. I know you feel like God has let you down. But try again.
