why God is making you wait
Spiritual growth in the wilderness and waiting season

The 2 Main Reasons God Is Making You Wait.

Estimated reading time: 13 minutes

Today, I want to tell you the two main reasons God is making you wait. You see, unless we understand what God is doing, we can easily mislabel a season. And the problem with mislabeling a season is that we don’t get what we needed to get translates to a longer wilderness season. Now let’s not get it twisted, God has appointed times and moments of visitation. But even in that, sometimes He will keep us longer in a season than He needs to. And that’s why I figured we should talk about this today so that you can understand why God is making you wait.

God is a good Father. And in His goodness, He will never give you something, knowing it will destroy you. He will hold on to what He has for you until you are ready to receive it. Therefore, the real reason God will make you wait is that you are not ready for what He has for you. And again, the aspect of His appointed time is true as well. That, my friend, is the reality.

We can try to make it look like witchcraft or the schemes of the enemy have caused the delay. But you know what God is Sovereign. So how would the enemy sabotage what came from God? Think about this the Bible in Romans 8:28 reminds us that all things work together for our good for those who love God. Therefore, if you love God, He ordains even your wait. And if God ordains it, how would the enemy defeat Him?

Therefore, the most logical explanation would be that you are not prepared for what God has for you. And that His time of visitation has not yet come.

And to prove it to you, let’s look at Habakkuk 2:3

Then the Lord replied: “Write the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. Habakkuk 2:2‭-‬3 NIV

when God is making you wait

At first glance, it seems paradoxical. On one end, it says it will not delay and yet in the same verse it says that it might tarry. But you see, this is where God’s thoughts come to play. He says that His thoughts are higher than our thoughts and His ways, higher than ours. So what God is trying to say in this scripture is that, in our view, it might look like it is carrying, but in God’s view, everything is right on schedule. And when it is time, He will make it happen suddenly. After all, He is an on-time God.

So to sum it all up these are the two main reasons God is making you wait.

  1. God’s appointed time for His visitation has yet to come.
  2. You are not prepared for what He has for you.

Now that you know this, the next question we need to answer is, then how can you wait well so that you don’t miss your moment of visitation

How to wait well when God is making you wait.

Quiet your soul.

You see, quieting your soul has everything to do with you being able to hear God’s voice. There is no way you can learn to hear God’s voice when you have pent-up junk and a bunch of noises in your head. This begs the question, why then should you quiet your soul.

Well, the main reason is so that you don’t get stuck in your waiting and wilderness season. When you don’t know God, you will not know His voice or what He is doing. And this might cause you to miss out when He is giving you instructions to move to your next. Remember, God works in mysterious ways. And your breakthrough moment will come in ways you least expect it. Imagine if Joseph had not learned to quiet his soul or learn to discern God’s voice.

God is making you wait

Would he have accurately interpreted Pharaoh’s dream? You see, the wilderness season is always preparation for where God is taking you. And in your waiting season, God is preparing you to learn His ways and lead so that you don’t get misled in the mountain. It is very easy to get distracted in the mountaintop. And this is simply because you have no limitation that’s causing you to seek God. And when you don’t learn to quiet your soul, it will be easy for you to be misled by the enemy. After all, the enemy will always use deception to get you off of God’s plan. It does not matter how grand what the enemy brings you is, the reality is that God will always have greater for you.

When the enemy tempted Jesus, he showed him the wealth of the world and how he would give Jesus all that if Jesus bowed before him. Well, what we now know is that God wanted to give Jesus authority over everything in heaven and on earth. And that is why His Name is above all names. This is an example of how the enemy brings the counterfeit before the promise. And when you don’t know how to hear God’s voice through quieting your soul, the enemy will get you to take the counterfeit when God had better for you. One thing you should know is that God will never give you anything that will take away from who you really are in Him. And He will never have you compromise your morals or values.

Ways you can learn to quiet your soul is through

  • Practicing solitude. When you master the art of solitude, you will easily learn how to quiet your soul. Your soul comprises your feelings, emotions, personality, etc. And that’s why solitude is needed. It is when you quiet your soul that you can really tame your emotions. Do you know that oftentimes outbursts are because of undealt with emotions? But you see, when you learn to get away, not only will you confront the emotions, but you will address them and this will bring emotional intelligence.
  • Journaling. Anytime you have junk in your soul, there is always chaos in your life. This is because you have so much going on within you and you have an inner conflict which means you lack clarity and cannot make the right decisions. Writing down what you feel helps clear your mind. Not only do you out words to what you are feeling, but you gain the clarity you need to address what you are feeling.
  • Silence. Until you get rid of all the external distractions, you can never learn how to quiet your soul. Embrace silence. Switch off all your devices. Meditate. Instead of picking up your phone first thing when you wake up, take time to hear your thoughts and talk to God.
Is God making you wait?

Stay rooted in God when God is making you wait.

God wants you to focus on Him as you wait. Spending time with God will help you understand His character, His ways, and His voice. And in so doing you will know when His set time arrives. Staying rooted in God equals intentionally setting time aside to be with Him. And how do you stay rooted in God?

  • Prayer. This is how you and I communicate with God. God wants to fellowship with you. And when you are in prayer, you get to hear Him and draw close to Him. God wants you to know Him more than you want to know Him. He wants you to learn how to discern His voice more than you want to. Therefore, as you spend time in prayer, He will reveal Himself to you. Not only that, you will gain clarity so much so that you will discern when He is moving even before He tells you. Child of God never underestimate the power of prayer. In prayer, God will give you the direction you need and the strategies you need to move to the place He has for you. Have a set time to meet with God daily and make it a part of your day. When you prioritize prayer, you will grow in your walk with God and it will be easy for you to move from one level to another. After all, today we have learned that one reason God makes us wait is lack of preparation. Prayer leads to growth, and growth leads to elevation. Can you imagine Moses went from being a coward to one of the most courageous people and a friend of God? Do you know the reason was because of him spending time with God? God cannot give you what you are not prepared for.
  • Reading the Bible. The word of God is where He reveals His character to you. You cannot say you know God when you don’t read His word. Always remember that the enemy disguises himself as the angel of Light. And when you learn God’s character, you become a difficult person for the enemy to fool. Another thing is that the more you spend time with God, the more you experience transformation. Remember, it is through renewing of your mind that you experience transformation. And it is after you have been transformed that God can elevate you.
  • Fellowship with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is your helper. Give Him room to teach you and reveal both Jesus and God to you. When you allow Him, He will reveal all these mysteries to you and enable you not to be deceived.

Silence the external voices.

The opinion of human beings can hinder you from moving forward. And if you struggle with people pleasing, God can have you wait before elevating you because He wants you to deal with that. Remember, one reason you can know God is making you wait is that you are not prepared. How will God elevate you when the people’s opinions matter to you?

God will not elevate you if He knows you will need to feed off of people’s praises and opinions. He wants to be your source. And He wants you to learn to heed only His voice and no one else’s. Therefore, He will take you through an uncomfortable journey to have you overcome the fear of man and people-pleasing. It does not matter if it is your parents or siblings, God will take you through a season of confusion, He might decide to shift or redirect you in a bid to get you to overcome this.

You cannot be effective in your promised land when you rely on whether or not people like you. How will you make tough decisions if you are afraid of saying no to people? How will you follow your path when the status quo matters to you? Child of God, I want you to understand one thing: God will do what He needs to do to get you where He wants you to go.

God is making you wait

Some ways you can overcome this is by

  • Knowing who God is. Understanding who God is will help you overcome the fear of man and people-pleasing. Knowing that God is the author and finisher of your faith and your creator will give you the courage to step into the unknown and out of the status quo.
  • Find your identity in Christ. When you discover who you are in Christ, you will not see the need to seek validation in other people. Knowing your identity in Christ will give you the confidence you need to be different.
  • Discover your purpose. When you know why God created you, you will not see the need to please others. And not only that, you recognize that your purpose is greater than other people’s opinions. Of course, I am not condoning a lack of honor and disrespect. What I am emphasizing is you learning to seek God’s approval and not that of other people.

Exercise patience and build up your staying power when God is making you wait.

You know often we give up on what God has told us because it is taking so long. And sometimes we might even get deceived into thinking it is not from God because it is not materializing. But child of God, I want you to know often, God’s promise takes time to materialize, and that is why God encouraged Habakkuk that although it tarries, it will surely come to pass.

waiting on God

Look at Joseph. It took Joseph 15+ years to see the manifestation of the dream God had given him. It took Abraham 25 years before God gave him Isaac. Just because God spoke something today does not mean it will come to be tomorrow. Him telling you is so that you can know what His plans are. After all, He tells us He does nothing until He reveals it. He tells you because He desires partnership with you. Allow patience to do perfect work in you. Because it is after that, that you will prove mature to receive the promise.

And some tips on how to exercise staying power aka patience.

  • Prayer. Prayer and fellowship with the Holy Spirit is the key to cultivating patience. After all, patience is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. In Christ, you will get the patience you need to hold on when God is making you wait.
  • Listen to other people’s testimonies. When you listen to other people’s testimonies on how long they had to wait and how God repaid them, you will get the strength to wait too. The Bible tells us we overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and the power of our testimonies. Go on YouTube and hear other people’s testimonies who went through similar situations as you. This will help you realize that if God did it for them, He will do it for you too.
  • Kill comparison. Remember, your journey is tailored for you. And you compete with no one else. Yet maybe someone has what you have, but we are all on different journeys. And sometimes maybe God is making you wait because what He has for you is greater than anything you could ever have imagined. Not only that maybe God gave them first because He wants to ignite your faith. Do not allow comparison, envy, and jealousy to creep in. Not only will that delay your elevation, but it will also hinder you from learning what God is doing through you in this season.
  • Worship. As you focus on God the things around you grow strangely dim. And with that, you realize that you have no problem waiting because you are focused on God and not your situation. Worship as you wait for God’s appointed time. Remember, at some point, you will get the green light with God telling you the wait is over.
God is making you wait.

Conclusion.

When God is making you wait, He has a reason. Don’t get so stuck on what is happening to you that you miss out on what God is doing through you. God’s plan for your life is greater than you could ever imagine. Below, I will leave out two Scriptures on the benefit of waiting. Allow God to renew your strength today.
