How To Know When God Is Asking You To Move.

Estimated reading time: 11 minutes

How do you know when God is asking you to move? Has God been asking you to move? Well, today I want to give you signs that will help you determine if God wants you to move. One thing I would like to clarify is that God is not the author of confusion. Therefore, when He wants you to do something, He will make it clear. You cannot miss God when He is asking you to do something grand. And another thing is that God will build equity with you before He asks you to do something so far out of your comfort zone. Anyway, with no further ado, let’s get right to it.

How can you know when God is asking you to move?

Your brook will run dry.

God often will make you uncomfortable where you are to get you to consider making that move. He will bring discomfort in your comfort zone so that you will not think twice when He asks you to move. Now, not that God is mean and sadistic. He does this because He understands that since we are human beings; we are creatures of habit and therefore we don’t always welcome change. And to get us to move, He will make it uncomfortable for us where we are. To illustrate this, I will give you two Biblical examples.

Joseph was sold to slavery by his brothers. Of course, this was a terrible way to leave your home country. But it almost seemed like the only way Joseph would have left his home. Now, of course, we know God is sovereign and could have used another route. He, however, allowed this method. And the reason it would have been difficult for Joseph to leave his home country was that his father, Jacob, loved him.

In fact, he even custom-made a coat specifically for him. It was no secret that he was the apple of his father’s eye. Now can you imagine Joseph leaving his father to go to a strange land of his own free will? And considering Jacob loved Joseph, would he have allowed him to leave his side?

Absolutely not. Like there would be no way Jacob would have let Joseph go. After all, Jacob was comfortable and that meant Joseph by virtue was too. God, however, knew there would be a drought in the future and he needed Joseph to go to Egypt and save his family from drought. And this was because God had promised Abraham that his lineage would live in Egypt and become slaves. And God, being one whose words never go back to Him void, had to go see all that come to fruition.

God is asking you to move

This brings about an important point. What you are going through is part of a bigger plan. And sometimes it could be a part of something God spoke to your grandparents. You might experience discomfort right now, not knowing that what God has you do will save your family or lineage in the future. Again, it could be God wants to honor the promise He made to your grandparents. And because of that, He is using this discomfort to prepare you for where He wants to take you. Could it be, that you are experiencing the discomfort of your destiny?

Although it makes little sense right now, I want to encourage you to go through that process. If God is walking you through the fire, lean in and allow Him to do the refining so that you can come out as pure gold. The discomfort and shaking you are experiencing in your place of comfort is a sign that God is getting ready to move you.

400+ years later, when God was getting the Israelites to move to Canaan, God made it so uncomfortable for them. This caused them to leave willingly when God told them to. The same place where they had experienced provision during famine became the same place they got persecuted. Again, this brings out another point when what used to be your place of comfort becomes your source of pain. That’s a sign that God is asking you to move. Maybe you are facing issues at your current job. And it seems the problems came out of nowhere. Could it be that God is asking you to move?

When God wanted Elijah to move, He caused the brook to dry up. Again, in the moment, it seemed like God had abandoned Elijah. However, God wanted to preserve the widow of Zarephath and her son. Therefore, God made it uncomfortable for Elijah for the greater good.

A desire to move.

Sometimes things can be perfect where you are and yet you find yourself desiring to move. When you suddenly desire to move from your current place and yet nothing is wrong, it could be that God is asking you to move. Maybe for you, you like adventures and don’t mind starting over. If that’s the case, God might just impress on your heart to move. And the desire could be so strong that you realize it will not ease until you move to the place God has for you.

God is asking you to move

Maybe you have been in a place for far too long and you feel you have outgrown the place. That could also be that God is asking you to move. Don’t ignore your desires. Of course, it is best to qualify them with the word of God and also seek confirmation from God. Besides that, it is also imperative that you recognize and discern the season you are in. However, if you find that you have a green light to go, then why wait?

4 Unique Characteristics of God’s Redirection.

Open doors.

Sometimes, God will ask you to move by giving you opportunities somewhere else. You could get a job in a new state or country altogether. Either way, there are times when God will use open doors to get you to move. Again, discernment and sensitivity will help you decipher if the opportunity is from God or not. And to cultivate discernment and sensitivity, it is imperative that you spend time on God’s Word. And also allow the Holy Spirit to lead and confirm to you. Not all good opportunities are from God. After all, the devil can masquerade as the angel of light. Pray and ask God if the opportunity is from Him. Just because you are used to experiencing closed doors, does not mean that you will never get to a season of open doors.

A word from God.

Like Abraham, God could give you a word asking you to move. It does not have to be an audible voice, although it could. It could be through a prophetic word, a dream, a vision, or the leading of the HOLY Spirit. The book of Joel tells us that in the last days (we are living in the last days) God would pour out His Spirit on human beings. Peter reiterates the same in Acts 2. I would like to caution you that you should not move until you get confirmation. Like I earlier said, God, will always make it clear when He gives you challenging instructions. Therefore, ensure you get confirmation before acting. A word from God will have these 2 characteristics.

  1. It will be in line with His word. God will always give you a word that is in His line with what He says in His Word. This is because He has placed exalted His word above His Name. And because in Him there is no shadow of shifting, He would never contradict Himself.
  2. God’s word will be in line with His character. Again, God would never contradict His nature. And to learn His nature, you need to know His word. And the Holy Spirit will echo the same.

How then should you respond when God is asking you to move?

  • Say yes. Again, I would like to encourage you to allow God to lead you. His path will always lead you to a glorious destination. And His plan will always be greater than your plan. Saying yes to God is difficult. However, it is rewarding. If you are struggling to say yes to God, I would like to encourage you to spend time with Him. It is through your understanding of His character that you will get the confidence to say yes. Find out who God is and His character. And you can do this by reading the Bible and cultivating a relationship with Him. Do you have a relationship with God? If you don’t, start with accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. That is the greatest decision you will ever make. Your yes will be as strong as your level of intimacy with God.
  • Be flexible. Being flexible will help you when God is asking you to move. Not only will you find it easy to move at a moment’s notice. But you find you will not get attached to a place. Flexibility comes from intimacy with God. The realization that God is good and that His thoughts of you are wonderful and pure are what will give you the confidence to embrace flexibility. Abraham had no problem moving around because He had a relationship with God. Joseph, the father of Jesus, was flexible so much so that when the angel told him to move, he did so without question. You, too, should hold everything loosely and be willing to adjust when God asks you to move.
  • Have faith. Through faith, it is easy to move when God is asking you to. Faith gives you the confidence to trust God, even when nothing makes sense. And faith is cultivated by letting go of control. Once you realize that you have God who is sovereign and in control of everything, you will not hesitate when He tells you to move. Relinquishing control comes from a posture of prayer, praise, and worship. As you pray, it becomes easy for you to surrender. And in so doing will move when God asks you to. Worship and praise help you focus on God. And this, in turn, helps you trust Him when He asks you to move. To reignite your faith, I encourage you to listen to other people’s testimonies who, through their obedience and move, ended up receiving more than they could ever think or imagine. These testimonies will give you the faith to believe that the same God who came through for them will do the same for you. You could even read the Bible and see how God rewarded Abraham for moving. Find testimonies that will anchor you when God is telling you to move.
