How To Know God Is Drawing You To Him.

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

How do you know when God is drawing you to Him? Are you in a season where you feel God is asking you to draw closer to Him? Well, God is always nudging us to get to know Him a little better. In fact, His desire is for you and me to be in constant fellowship and communication with Him. After all, that is why He created us. And it was also the reason He sent Jesus to die on the cross. For redemption. Unfortunately, because of distractions here and there, we find it difficult to commune with God continually and that is why sometimes He draws us to Himself. So what are the signs that God is drawing you to Him?

Signs that God is drawing you to Him.

Confusion.

Whenever you are experiencing confusion in your life, it can be a sign that God is drawing you to Him. God can allow you to go through a season where you don’t understand what’s going on simply because He wants to get your attention. It can be as simple as having an identity crisis to as big as the inability to discern His voice. Sometimes there are conflicting prophetic words that cause you to get a little more curious to know Him for yourself.

Have you ever gone through a season where it seems like all the prophetic voices you know are giving contradicting words? So let’s say you are in a season where God wants you to experience His love, and He has even been leading you to scriptures on the same. Then, as you listen to other prophetic words, you realize they are talking about judgment. What do you do in such a situation?

One thing you should realize is that the prophetic words and voices can only confirm what God is already saying to you. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not discounting wise voices. However, it is also important to realize that God is also very personal. He might take you on a journey that differs from other people depending on the season you are in.

While it’s true, it could be a season of judgment to the world. It could also be a season of experiencing God’s love for you. And the perfect example is Egypt and the Israelites. During the plague, the Israelites experienced God’s protection and security. And at the same time, the Egyptians experience the wrath of God. So, as you can see, it is not uncommon to have some people to experience peace while others are experience chaos in their lives.

Let me ask you this: do you know what season you are in? Has God been speaking to you about something different from what others say? That confusion is God telling you to draw closer to Him. There are things He wants to reveal to you that is unique to you.

Esther experienced a lifting up when Vashti experienced a casting down. The same thing happened to Mordecai, he was exalted when Haman was hanged. Don’t always assume that the words that others are speaking will always ply to you. It’s no doubt that what they are saying is exactly what will happen to the world. However, we know God has the power to protect His own if He so wishes.

The key, however, is to discern His voice to avoid being deceived. Do you know God’s voice? Just to give you some pointers, God’s voice will never contradict His word. He also will never go against His character, which is revealed in His Word. The Bible clearly tells us that God has exalted His word above His Name.

Therefore, anything that contradicts God’s word is not from Him. Discernment comes from relationships and deep knowledge of His word. The first step is accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. And the second step is to intentionally spend time both in prayer and reading the Bible. The more you do this and ask for help from the Holy Spirit, the more you will learn His voice.

A deep yearning for more.

Do you feel a deep yearning for more? Have you realized that you have an empty void you desire to sew filled? That could be a sign God is drawing you closer to Him. After Adam and Eve sinned, they experienced a form of death. God had promised them that should they eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge and life, they would die. We, however, know the death was not physical. What died was their spirit and that separated them and God. That is why Jesus came to redeem us to God and revive our spirit. No wonder Paul tells us we were dead in our transgressions. But in Jesus, we have been resurrected to Him.

When God is stirring your Spirit, He will ignite a desire inside you for more. And this desire will go unfulfilled until you discover Him. So let me ask you this: have you been experiencing a deep yearning for more? Have you found that no matter what you try to fill your heart with, nothing satisfies you? God is asking you to come closer to Him. He wants to reveal to you who He is and who you are.

Loss and pain.

Unfortunately, sometimes God draws us in through pain and loss. While He might not be the one who causes pain, He will use that pain to draw Him to you. The Bible reminds us that all things work out together for the good of those who love God. Hannah went through a painful season of barrenness. And it was in this season that she got to experience God for herself. She never would have known God as the miracle worker had she not been barren. Job would never have known God as a comforter had he not lost everything.

Are you experiencing loss and pain right now? Could it be that God is using this season to draw you to Him? It might seem to contradict for God to use pain to draw you to Him. But the reality is that sometimes it takes you going through pain even to remember God exists. Of course, the goal is to ensure that we heed His voice when He first nudges us so that we can avoid going through pain.

However, when we go through pain, it is imperative to stay rooted in Him. God promises He will never leave us nor forsake us. He also promises that He is near to the brokenhearted and those whose hearts are crushed. Instead of going through the pain alone, I want to encourage you to turn to God because He is inviting you in to get to know Him more. He is the only one who can satisfy you. Don’t run to the wrong well.

Isolation.

When God is taking you on a journey of redirection, He might have you isolate yourself. Often, the isolation is involuntary. It could be through the loss of a job. And through this, you realize you don’t have the means to hang around your friends as you used to. Or it could be you having to move back home with your parents because you don’t have any source of income, leading you to isolate yourself from your friends.

Whatever the case, God may have you isolate because He is drawing you to Him. Such a season can be frustrating and lonely, especially if you are an extrovert. But again, I want to remind you that when you find yourself going through isolation, God is drawing you to Him. And while it is uncomfortable right now, just hold on because the end will be glorious.

What should your posture be when God is drawing you to Him?

Surrender.

Relinquishing control is the best thing you can ever do when God is drawing you to Him. This is because the journey will make little sense, especially if you are a planner. But in seasons when God wants you to lean in, He will take you on an unfamiliar path. The discomfort of having to step outside your comfort zone will lead you to Him. Don’t rebel, just surrender. You see it is surrender that you get to experience the fullness of God in your life. If you have always desired God to use you mightily, then surrender is key.

What does surrender look like?

  • Letting go of your plan and giving Jesus the wheel. Being okay with Jesus being in the driver’s seat is what surrender looks like. This means He might ask you to leave a career you love because He has something else for you. Peter, James, and John all had to stop fishing because Jesus asked them to. God might have you step into a field you are unfamiliar with. And if you are fully surrendered, you will have no problem saying yes.
  • Getting out of your comfort zone is another form of surrender. This looks like you doing unorthodox things because God is asking that of you. It could mean letting go of your friends because you are in a season where they can no longer go with you. Sometimes, God will ask you to leave your friends and even family. Abraham had to leave his family and friends and move to the country God would show him in Genesis 12. It was not an easy thing, considering Abraham was 75 years when God told him to move. But that’s what surrender looks like. Abraham had to trust that God had better for him and so he willingly got out of his comfort zone. Surrender is trusting God amid confusion. Surrender is giving God your yes even when nothing makes sense. At the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus had to surrender to God’s will, although He did not want to go to the cross.
  • Not getting attached to people, things, or places. When you are surrendered to God, you will hold everything loosely. This is because you recognize He could ask you to move at a moment’s notice. And the only way you can have this kind of posture is when you know who you are and who God is. When God is drawing you to Him, He wants to reveal to you an aspect of Him you don’t know. And you can miss out on this revelation when you are attached to people or things. After all, the goal of Him drawing you to Himself is to have you let go of all the things that are occupying His space. Although it is not easy, ask the Holy Spirit for help. He will help you detach from whatever is taking the space that only God should hold. Your response should be that God is enough.

Scriptures that will help you surrender when God is drawing you to Him.

James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

Romans 12:1
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Luke 9:23
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11:29
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Matthew 26:39
And going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; not as I will, but as you will.”

Conclusion

God wants you to get to know Him personally. Having wise counsel is always important. However, you should also have a relationship with God such that whatever they tell you confirms what God has already told you. Again, be sure that pain and loss draw you to God. Don’t allow the enemy schemes to separate you from the only one who can be your peace and comfort.

In seasons of isolation, lean on the only one who will never leave you nor forsake you. And lastly, surrender should always be your posture when God draws you in. Is God drawing you to Him? Leave a comment below.
