4 Things To Do As You Are Waiting On God For Breakthrough

Estimated reading time: 9 minutes

Are you waiting on God for a breakthrough? And are you waiting well? How do you even know you are waiting well? Waiting on God for a breakthrough is frowned upon. This is especially so because most people use this word to promote laziness and complacency. But there is so much that goes in when you are waiting on God than meets the eye. That’s why I decided it was time for us to talk about this. Hannah, Abraham, Joseph, and David all went through seasons of waiting before they experienced their breakthrough. In fact, when they were in their in-between season, it seemed as though what they were waiting on would never happen. Things looked so bleak. So what did they do while they were waiting on God for a long time for God’s promises to come to pass? And what should you do?

4 things you should do as you are waiting on God for your breakthrough.

Learn the skills for your next season.

Learning the skills that you will need in your promised land is essential if you want to transition to your promised land well. Unless you are fully prepared, God will not take you to the next level. After all, what is the point of taking you to your next if it is only going to overwhelm you? Jesus even says in the Bible, unless you are faithful with little, much cannot be added to you.

Therefore, the wilderness and waiting season is the time for you to perfect your craft so that when it is time for your revealing, you can be ready. When Joseph was in the hiding season, he learned to hear God’s voice. He also learned how to interpret dreams because he practiced them. He not only interpreted his own dreams, but he also interpreted the dreams of the butler and the baker. And because of practice, he did not second guess himself.

That is why he was ready to interpret Pharaoh’s dream when it was time. And his interpretation led to his elevation. You see, the hidden season is meant for your preparation. And when you don’t steward this season well, you will not successfully navigate your next season.

This brings to life the scripture that says that your gifts will make room for you before kings and queens. Who would have known that interpreting dreams would be the reason for Joseph’s elevation?

One beautiful thing that comes to light with this story is that whatever God will use to elevate you is already within you. That is why you should not allow comparison, competition, and envy to take root in your life. Your breakthrough is tied to the skill God put inside you. If you are struggling to find the talent and gift inside you, let these 2 questions guide you.

  • Do you have a skill that comes easily to you? That is you don’t struggle to do it? It could be singing, speaking, writing, reading, teaching, painting, or dancing. What skill comes easily to you?
  • Do you enjoy the said skill? Your talent will come naturally to you and you will enjoy it. God, in His kindness, will always give us skills that we enjoy. After all, He has the best intentions for us. What skill can you do for days on end and not get tired?

Joseph enjoyed giving people solutions to help ease their pain. It was his compassion that led him to interpret the butler and baker’s dream. Today, I want to encourage you to perfect your craft. And realize that although it might take time, it is well worth it. David perfected his warrior and protection craft when he was in the field shepherding. And it was through this training that he could defeat Goliath. Mind you, he did so with a sling and stones. The same thing he used when he was in the field. This brings me to my next point

Discover your identity in Christ

Because David knew his identity in God, he did not allow Goliath to phase him. He was confident in his skills. Not only that, because he knew his identity, but he also did not need to fit in. This means that he did not allow King Saul to convince him to use the armor to fight Goliath. He knew what he had was enough. When you know who you are in Christ, you will not see the need to be someone you are not. Instead, you will focus on what you have and who you are to get to where you need to be. When you are waiting on God for your breakthrough, it is imperative that you discover what God says about you.

And in order to do that, you need to have a relationship with God. And this starts by receiving Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. Next, you need to read the Bible to get to know more about God. Who is God and what is His character? It is easier to trust God when you know His character. And also getting to know Him will help you discern His voice when He speaks. Having a relationship with God helps you avoid the pitfalls of deception. And it also helps you walk on the right path.

Once you have done that, the next thing is to read the scriptures that show you who God says you are. God says you are fearfully and wonderfully made. This means there is no need to be someone you are not. This scripture will help you avoid comparison and will also help you embrace your uniqueness. Recognizing that the skill God gave you is enough comes from knowing your identity. What God has given you is enough. Remember the prophets, widow? God used the jar of oil to bring abundance in her life. The multiplication of that oil led her to settle her debts and even gain financial freedom.

Unless you know who you are and what God says about you, you will never have the confidence to be yourself. Embrace your uniqueness, and avoid people-pleasing.

Build your faith and patience muscle.

Without faith, it is impossible to please God. When you are waiting on God for breakthrough, faith will be the glue that holds you together. When you have faith, you will navigate the waiting season perfectly. And faith will give you the confidence to have patience because you recognize God will redeem the time. Abraham had faith when he was waiting on God for breakthrough. Although both he and Sarah were advanced in years, he had faith that God would bless him with a son because he had promised him.

Faith in Hebrews 11:1 is described as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Faith is believing in something that looks impossible. It is holding on to the promise that God gave you against all odds. As you are waiting on God for your breakthrough, I want to encourage you to hold on to that promise God gave you. This is because He is not a man that He should lie and His words will never return to Him void. What God has spoken will come to pass, and He fulfills His promise.

Patience is waiting on God’s promises regardless of how long it takes. It took Abraham 25 years to see the fulfillment of what God had spoken to him. It took Joseph 17 years before his dream came to pass. David did not take over the throne until 13 years had passed. Patience is where you get refined and your dream gets tested.

However, you should not allow the waiting season to lead you to get discouraged. I want to encourage you to keep going. After all, God reminds us we will reap a reward if we don’t faint. Don’t grow weary. And allow patience to have its perfect works in you. Because when God is done refining your faith, you will reap a reward.

Some keys that will help build your faith muscle are:

  • Reading the Bible. Seeing other people’s testimonies of what God did in their lives will help ignite your faith. Even the Bible reminds us we will overcome by the word of our testimony and the Blood of the Lamb. Allow other people’s testimonies to ignite your faith. Read about Hannah, Ruth, Joseph, and Daniel and see what God can do for you. Their stories will also help you realize that your patience will pay off if you don’t faint.
  • Surround yourself with faith-filled people. People who encourage you to keep going and waiting on God are key when you are waiting on God for your breakthrough. Who is in your circle? Mary had to go to Elizabeth to get her faith ignited. You too should find a circle of friends that will encourage you in your waiting season. Community is key in your waiting as they will help pray for you when you are weary.

Gratitude, praise, and worship are key when waiting on God for breakthrough.

God inhabits the praises of His people. We have seen repeatedly in the Bible how praise helped the Israelites receive their breakthrough. King Jehoshaphat gained victory over his enemies through praise and worship. When you learn to praise and worship, you activate your breakthrough. Paul and Silas got out of jail because of their worship of God.

When you praise and worship, you focus on God. And shifting your perspective from your problem to God will help you realize how big God is. And as you magnify God, you minimize the problem. This helps to shift your atmosphere and activate your faith. In doing so, you make room for God to intervene on your behalf. What you focus on, you empower. Gratitude helps you focus on the good things that are going on in your life. Doing so will help change your thinking and even help you identify opportunities for breakthrough when God presents them to you.

Sometimes the reason we are yet to receive our breakthrough is because of our perspective. The Israelites missed out on getting to their promised land sooner because they focused on their inadequacies. Gratitude reminds you of what God did in the past and therefore gives you the confidence that He will do even greater. You see, had the Israelites focused on the miracles God had done in the past, they would have realized that He had the power to deliver them from the Canaanites. Therefore gratitude is key. It brings to your mind all the wonderful things God did in the past.

Conclusion

When you are waiting on God for breakthrough, you need to set an atmosphere of expectation. After all, what your mind meditates on becomes your reality. And your actions will always lean toward your most frequent thoughts. When a woman is about to give birth, she goes through the nesting period, which helps prepare her for the arrival of her baby.

Let me ask you this: are your actions in line with your expectation of breakthrough? Have you honed in on your skills? Are you prepared for what you have been praying for? Even the Bible tells us to study to show ourselves approved. You will need to prove that you have what it takes. And to do this, you will need to practice because perfection comes from mastery.

God has something grand on the other side of your perseverance. Keep doing what you know God told you to do. Discipline and consistency will lead to your breakthrough. When you practice long enough, you will get to your moment of revealing. And because you have done the work, you will not be overwhelmed. In fact, it will look effortless. As the Holy Spirit for strength to exercise staying power. You will get to the other side. Don’t lose hope. Your breakthrough is on the way.
