Let me ask you this: do you have that deep longing to live a life that pleases God but just don’t know how to do it? Or maybe you just want to know how to spend time with God effectively. Whatever the case may be, I believe that these 5 keys will help you, so let’s get right to it.

5 Keys that will strengthen your walk with God.

Prayer will strengthen your walk with God

The problem we have as Christians is that often we complicate prayer and in doing so it becomes a task that no one wants to engage in. When you complicate prayer you overwhelm yourself making it difficult to engage in the first place. After all why would someone engage in something that seems daunting to even begin? This is why I felt to talk about prayer today. Simply put, prayer is communication with God. And the best part about prayer is that you get to talk to God in a way that feels natural to you. You don’t need to follow someone else’s blueprint that is unless it is Jesus. But as we see with the Lord’s prayer, it is not complicated and does not have all these rules and regulations that we need to follow. And just to prove it to you let’s break it down.

Our father who art in heaven

This is acknowledging God as your Father. This makes Him more relatable than approaching Him as God. Jesus wanted you and me to know that we can approach God as Father. In so doing our posture changes because we recognize that not only does He love us as His children but He is ready to listen to us because He has a father’s heart

And if you are struggling to receive Him as your father I want to give you this scripture that shows us that He is our Father.

You see after Jesus had been resurrected, Mary went to the tomb and couldn’t find His body. This hurt her and she started crying. It was in the midst of all that Jesus appeared to her and asked her why she was weeping. And then introduced Himself to her. Jesus told her that through His resurrection God was now our Father as well as His father. Yet in another scripture, Paul reminds us that we are children of God with Jesus being the Firstborn Son. So you see, you are a child of God and He is your Father. Don’t allow the enemy to bombard you with the lies that God does not love you or that you don’t belong because that is not true. He loves you and you are His child. That is why He sent Jesus to die on the cross

Hallowed be Your Name.

Although God is our Father, He is also Almighty and Sovereign and we should approach Him with reverence. Reverence simply put is respecting Him and adoring Him for who He is. And to bring the point home. How do you present yourself when you go to meet the kings and queens of this world? There is protocol and honor that you accord them. Now picture yourself presenting yourself to God. Mind you, this is your Creator and the Alpha and Omega. How much more would you approach Him? This is what I mean by revering Him. It does not mean that you are afraid of Him. It simply means that you respect Him for who He is and you recognize that He is worthy of your Honor, praise and adoration.

Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Where God is present, His presence is there. So it’s only natural to desire that His presence permeate your world. After all, it is His presence that will change what needs to be changed. When His presence steps in, darkness has to flee. And we know all these problems are a result of darkness. Inviting heaven to interrupt the enemy’s agenda is the secret to living the kind of abundant life that Jesus came to give us. As Christians, we should be walking in the fullness of the price Jesus paid. But for us to do that we need to be in tune with heaven. That is why it is imperative to invite the kingdom of God to permeate the earth.

Give us this day our daily bread.

God wants to meet your need. That is why He reminds us that just as He takes care of the sparrows, He will take care of you. He does not want you and me to worry because He has it already figured out. Child of God do not be embarrassed to ask God for what you need. He tells us that when we ask He will answer and we have not because we ask not.

Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Sin will hinder God from moving on our behalf. That is why it is imperative that we repent and ask God to forgive us. He is more than ready to do so. He tells us that when we repent He is faithful and just to forgive us. But for you to flow in His forgiveness, you have to extend the same to others as well. You cannot EXPECT God to forgive you if you cannot do the same. It is difficult to forgive I know that I am struggling in that area as I write this to you.

But I have been seeking help from the Holy Spirit. He promises to help us with our weakness. Think about this for a second, just imagine all those terrible sins you have committed and how God forgave you. This will help you forgive those who have hurt you. After all, God loves them as much as He loves you too.

Why would you not forgive one of His creations? May God help us to learn to forgive. What they did to you hurt and I know some might be more terrible than others. I am not discounting the pain you experienced. I only want you to experience freedom. And by the way, I have been where you are too and I was bitter for such a long time. In fact, I did not want to hear the word forgiveness.

But over the years, God has helped me heal, and now I don’t struggle as much with forgiveness. So I encourage you to turn to God and ask Him to help you let go and forgive so that you can walk in the fullness of His forgiveness and not hinder His blessings from reaching you.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

The enemy is always seeking whom to devour. And if we are not careful, he will devour us. After all the Bible warns us that the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. This is why it is important to ask God to help you overcome temptation. He will do so when you ask Him. After all, He wants to see you win.

Meditation is another key that will strengthen your walk with God.

When God appeared to Joshua in Joshua 1:9, He instructed Joshua to meditate on the laws that God gave Moses and the scripture that follows is that God promises to be with him. You see, the more you meditate on the word of God the more you make room for God in your life.

You empower what you focus on, if you want to cultivate a relationship with God, then it is essential that you meditate on the word of God. This looks like you intentionally setting time aside to read the word. And I am not just talking about scheming through scripture. I am talking about you allowing the word to take root in your heart. Ask yourself questions. What have you learned from the scripture? How does it apply in your life? And in what ways can you personalize it so as to bring the point home? The more you do that the more you find yourself hiding the word of God in your heart. In doing so, you will not sin against Him and this will draw you closer to Him. After all it is sin that will separate you from God.

Journaling

Journaling will strengthen your walk with God because it is as you get rid of the junk inside that you make room for God in your life. Often times the different things that happen to us in life can hinder us from cultivating a relationship with God. And it is when we acknowledge what we are feeling and learn to write it, that we can process the emotions and get rid of the calluses that harden our hearts from God. You know pain can hinder you from drawing closer to God. You can even find yourself blaming God for your misfortune. And when you do that, how will you have a relationship with Him? A relationship is built on trust after all.

There is no formula for journaling. Just start with a sentence and say exactly what is in your heart. The more you create a habit of doing that, the more freedom you get. The more you empty yourself of all the junk, the more you make time for what God wants to speak to you. And that is how you strengthen your walk with God.

Solitude is yet another key that will strengthen your walk with God

Jesus would withdraw to spend time with God and so should you. It is in solitude that you are able to hear from God and even get to learn more about Him. That is why it is imperative that you practice stillness which is quieting the soul and silence which is getting rid of all the external distractions. Abraham and Moses, whom God referred to them as His friends all had one thing in common and that is solitude. The more time they spent with God the more they got to learn about Him. This deepened the bond between them and God. Quality time is the key to any healthy relationship. And just as you would spend time with your loved one, I want to encourage you to spend time with God too.

This looks like you being intentional and consistent with the time you choose to spend with God. The more consistent you are, the more you get to discover God. God tells us in the book of Jeremiah that when we seek Him with all of our hearts we will find Him. With this promise in mind, I want to encourage you to learn to spend time with God and be very intentional about it. Not only that, learn to guard that time.

Praise and worship

Praise and worship will strengthen your walk with God because they help you shift your focus from self to God. And we all know the more we focus on God, the more we get to know about Him. And doing that only leads us to a deeper intimacy with God. God called David a man after His own heart. And often in scripture, especially in the book of Psalms, we see him worship and give thanks to God. Borrowing from the page of David, we see that worship and praise will lead us to the heart of God, which in turn will strengthen our walk with God. Knowing God’s heart will only lead you to desire to please Him and do according to His will.

Conclusion

Make 2024 the year you build habits that will strengthen your walk with God. God always wants to commune with you. He wants to reveal to you great and mighty things you know not. So today I encourage you to incorporate these 5 habits in your life and watch how by the end of the year you will have strengthened your walk with God.

God loves you so much and wants to fellowship with you. That is why He sent Jesus here on earth because He wanted to restore the relationship between us and Him so that He can commune with us. Romans 5:10-11
For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
