Is It True That God Keeps His Promises? (2 Scriptures That Prove He does)

Estimated reading time: 12 minutes

Have you been waiting on God for a long time? Has the waiting caused you to doubt whether God is ever going to keep His promise? Maybe because you have been waiting on God for a long time. You are full of doubt and can’t seem to see a scenario where God keeps His promise in your life. If this is you, then I encourage you to join me as we dig deep into the topic of today. Is it true that God keeps His promises

And before I start off, I would like to give you a scripture from the book of Ezekiel.

And say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore with uplifted hand to the descendants of Jacob and revealed myself to them in Egypt. With uplifted hands, I said to them, “I am the Lord your God.”

On that day I swore to them I would bring them out of Egypt into a land I had searched out for them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful of all lands. “‘But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me; they did not get rid of the vile images they had set their eyes on, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. So I said I would pour out my wrath on them and spend my anger against them in Egypt. But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites. Therefore, I led them out of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. Ezekiel 20:5‭-‬6‭, ‬8‭-‬10 NIV

This scripture clarifies that God will never make a promise He can’t keep and that when He makes a promise, it is not dependent on who you are or what you do, but on Himself. After all, He would never want His name to be mocked. And again, His breaking His promise and covenant would go against the very essence of who He is. This is because the Bible says that He is faithful, true, full of integrity, and reliable. How would He be reliable if He failed to honor His promise? God does not make empty talks or give empty promises, HE is very intentional in all He does, and when He makes a promise; He does so, having planned everything out.

And just to paint you a picture, let’s look at the story of Abraham.

So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat, and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.” Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two, and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half. Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove them away. As the sun set, Abram fell into a deep sleep, and thick and dreadful darkness overcame him.

Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation, your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants, I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates— Genesis 15:9‭-‬18 NIV

In this scripture, we see God making a covenant with Abraham and in the same scripture, He also gave Abraham insight into the future. God told Abraham that the Israelites would be slaves for 400 years. And after that, He would deliver them. But notice that the reason for all this has nothing to do with the Israelites but everything to do with the Amorites. The sins of Amorites would be at their peak and they would be ripe for punishment. Of course, we shouldn’t celebrate other people’s misfortunes. But God is so strategic, He knew that although He had given the Israelites the land, there were still some things that had to take place before they could inherit the land.

God could not just chase the Amorites out of the land. Because the wild animals would take over the land and would overpower the Israelites later. God in His Sovereignty had them live in a foreign land for 400 years: as He prepared the place for them. Because the Amorites did not know that the place they were in was not theirs, they continued plowing, planting, and building homes as one would in their own home. They did not know that they were doing it for other people. That’s why the Israelites when it was time for them to take over, all had to do was to conquer the enemies and possess lands and buildings that they had not been a part of the growth and construction.

So as we think about the promises God has spoken over our lives, we need to realize that there are other things that God is working out behind the scenes, which is why it is taking long. Also, you can never inherit something you are not prepared for. Even the Bible says that inheritance given too soon is like a curse, it does not benefit the beneficiary.

What are some lessons we can learn from this to help us anchor on the fact that God keeps His promises?

God is Faithful.

Throughout scripture, God has always honored every word He has spoken. And He even says in Isaiah 55:11 that His word will never return to Him void until it has completed that which He sent it out to do. God will never go back on His word. It’s easy to view God through the lenses of our past and experiences. But today I want to encourage you not to. Rather, recognize THAT God is good, and He is more than your experiences. Do not allow your experiences to cloud your judgment on who God is. You can rely on God. He is dependable, and He does not make a promise He can’t keep.

God’s promises are not dependent on you.

This is key because often we imagine that because we have messed up that God will no longer keep His promise. This, however, is wrong thinking. Of course, I am not condoning sin and wilful rebellion and disobedience. There are consequences for disobedience. However, it is important that we recognize God’s Sovereignty and Power. God will still do what He intends to do in your life. If He made you a promise, it will come to pass.

God gave David a promise that there would always be a king from his lineage. And this was the case even when the lineage of David messed up that someone else had to take over God still gave Judah to David’s lineage. And not only that Jesus, who is the King of kings, is from David’s lineage and His throne is eternal. So God, because He made the promise, ensured that it came to pass. He even ensured that Jesus was born in that lineage to fulfill the covenant He made.

Today I want to encourage you to let go of the notion that you are too far gone for God to keep His covenant in your life. God will keep His promises and I want you to hold on to that truth and never let go.

You will go through a waiting season.

The word of God upon your life will constantly be tested. There is always a process to the promise. And it is in the waiting that you are refined to prepare you for the promise. God wants to give you the very best He has for you. But also, He is a good Father who does not want you to perish. So factoring that in, leads to the wilderness season. And the wilderness season is a place where you feel hidden and unable to receive your promise. It is a place of limitation and dryness. If you want to know more about the wilderness season check out my blog posts on when you feel hidden and the other one on how to stop struggling in the wilderness season.

The enemy does not want you to walk in the fulness of who God created you to be. So he would rather have you forfeit the promise before it comes to be. That is why you are experiencing doubts and unbelief. These are lies from the pit of hell. In fact, let these lies fuel your faith to believe THAT God will do what he said He would do, and that He is not a man THAT He should lie.

You are not weird for doubting.

Even Abraham, the father of faith, doubted God’s promise over his life because of how long it took before it came to pass. He even tried to help God by having Ishmael. He also asked God to bless Ishmael because he did not believe that God would bring the promise to pass. You are not the only one who is experiencing doubts and unbelief. Everyone else went through that and some are going through that right now. There are things I am waiting on God for and I have days where I doubt, wondering if God is going to keep His promises although there are scriptures that say He will.

You will have moments where doubting His promise becomes prevalent, especially when your surrounding contradicts the promise. Imagine Abraham having to hold on to the faith that he would have a son at 90+ years. He did not see how it would be since both he and Sarah were in their latter years. And just to show you he doubted God’s promises, here is a scripture.

15 God also said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”

17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” 18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”

19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac.[d] I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.” 22 When he had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

Abraham doubted God would keep His promise, and he laughed when God talked about blessing Sarah with a son. Imagine that. This was someone who had experiential knowledge of God. He would even have conversations with God, yet he doubted. Don’t beat yourself up when you experience bouts of disappointment and doubt. It happens. After all, you are only human. But don’t let the doubts overpower you that you forget God keeps His promises. The Bible calls God a promise keeper.

Conclusion

Beloved, God has not forgotten you. And you can trust that every promise He has spoken over your life will come to pass. God will never fail in keeping His promise. In fact, the Bible tells us that even when we are unfaithful, He still is faithful because He cannot deny Himself. Faithfulness is the essence of who God is. Since God is not bound by time, He does not operate as we do. That is why His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.

God keeps His promises, and He is faithful to see that God will fulfill every word He promises. It is only a matter of timing. He is working behind the scenes to ensure that everything happens just as it is supposed to. He knows you are weary. But today I want to encourage you to hold on and don’t lose hope. You never know it could happen today.
