How To Surrender to God’s Will: When God Disrupts The Familiar.

Estimated reading time: 7 minutes

Not my will but Your will be done. Has the Lord been calling you into a place of surrender? Have you been feeling the nudge to step out of your comfort zone, the familiar and expected and embrace a new path? Have you been asked to surrender to God’s will? Hey there my name is Mercy. Welcome to my blog. This blog is for those who God is calling to step out of the boat and embrace a new path. From a place of safety and onto a path of surrender. If this is is you then I want to invite you to become a part of the community. And letโ€™s move from surrender and obedience into purpose together.

I used to think that surrender was soft music and quiet trust. But I have come to realize that surrender is simply disruption. It is one thing to sing about surrender but a whole other thing to actually walk it out. So what exactly is surrender?

Definition of surrender.

The biblical definition of surrender is yielding to Godโ€™s will, purpose and desire for your life in exchange for your own will. It is saying yes to God even after counting the cost.

My story.

Just to share a little bit about my story. I had a plan for my life. I knew what I wanted to do with my life and how I wanted it to turn out… but in mid 2023 I felt a tugging in mu heart to give up what I wanted and step into what God wanted. This tugging came at a time of confusion from the stagnation I was experiencing. However I did not take it seriously as I assumed that it was just the disappointment speaking.

In 2024 I had a dream that made it clear that surrender was what God was asking me to do.. and slowly I started entertaining that idea.. The doors slammed shut and it did not matter how much u tried to push, the door wouldnโ€™t budge. Fast forward to 2025 and the desire to fully surrender became even more intense the more I spent time with God.

In my mind I thought I would start this channel after I had experienced my breakthrough to share my testimony. But that wasnโ€™t the case. And so here I am sharing my journey with you as I surrender to Godโ€™s will and embrace this new path. Unexpected and unfamiliar. Although I feel unqualified I know I am in Godโ€™s will. Can you relate? What has God been asking you to embrace and step into?

Charge for those surrendering to God’s Will.

Today I would like to encourage you to say yes to God. When He called Abram in Genesis 12, Abram did not know where he was going. All he knew was that the Lord had promised to be with him.

Moses thought he would remain a shepherd forever until God interrupted him and called him to deliver the Israelites from bondage.

Surrender does not mean that you know where you are going or how itโ€™s going to look like. It simply looks like you saying yes and allowing the path to unfold as you go. Surrender is not passive. It is taking action. And although you might be scared and worried, you just need to do it scared.

And maybe you are concerned because you feel like youโ€™ve lost the person who you thought you were. The Lord is inviting you to embrace the new person you are becoming.

Surrendering to God’s Will require that you have this in mind.

  • ย The Lord already knows who He called you to be. He knows this version of you He is calling you to become. And although it night feel new to you, itโ€™s not new to God. When He called Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1, the Lord reminded him that He knew him before he formed him and He had already ordained him a prophet of nations. God was not giving Jeremiah an idea. He had already established that in heaven. He already knew what He wanted him to do. This also means that when God is calling you to step into the new, He has already equipped you for it. Everything youโ€™ve been through was preparing you for this. And again when God calls you into the new it means the ordained season for this aspect of you to emerge has come. And although you might not be ready for it, heaven wants to back you as you step into this new season.
  • There is never a wasted season with God. You might feel like you wasted an entire season of your life through investing your time and resources only for God to disrupt your plan. However there is nothing wasted in Godโ€™s kingdom. Moses being in the wilderness for those 40 years was to prepare him to lead the Israelites for the 40 years they were in the wilderness. That season was never wasted. I want to encourage you by telling you, God will still use what you have. It might not be in the way you expect but there will be seasons where the very skills you feel you are letting go of will come in handy. Donโ€™t be discouraged.
  • Your new season might look daunting because itโ€™s unfamiliar to you. But I want you to remember that God can and will multiply the little in your hand. It is more than enough. That space God is calling you into, He knows how to advance you in it. Who knew that all it would take for Joseph to get out of prison was to interpret Pharaohs dream. This also reminds us not to despise the small beginnings. Had Joseph never interpreted the butlers dream, he would never have been positioned to Internet Pharaohs dream which led to his elevation. This shows that our diligence is paramount.
  • Even in the confusion keep moving forward your next instruction will come as you follow your current instruction. Donโ€™t wait for perfection. Practice is what makes perfect. And sometimes experience is the best teacher. Donโ€™t wait until you are ready. Just do it.
  • Lean on God. He started it, He will finish it. You donโ€™t need to trust in your own abilities. Trust His leading. Let His voice be the loudest one for you in this season. He who began a good work in you us faithful to complete it.
  • Donโ€™t allow who you used to be hinder you from who God is calling you to be. It is okay to reinvent and become a version you never imagined.

The Truth about surrender to God’s will.

Surrender is not weakness, it is alignment. It kills pride and comfort. It causes you to relinquish control because all you have to do is trust. But it is in surrendering to God’s Will that purpose is birthed and your true identity emerges. When you get to the end of yourself and say yes to God, that is when true fulfillment comes. And while it might not feel that way at first, it is the stepping stone to contentment.

What to expect after surrendering to God’s Will.

  • You may not have immediate clarity. Go anyway. God is not asking you to figure it out on your own. He is asking you to trust that He already has. Trust His leading. There will be moments of doubt and confusion.
  • People may not understand. And that’s okay. Mary was misunderstood so was Abram. Can you imagine leaving your comfort zone to go to a new country? What about Noah? Building an ark in preparation for rain, something that had never even happened before? Don’t remain loyal to the version that people know. Let that go and be unrelenting as you pursue what God is calling you to do.
  • There will be seasons of silence, warfare and confusion. And that’s normal. Even Moses had to experience a season of confusion when Pharaohs heart was hardened. That did not mean that the assignment had changed. It was just preparation for greater manifestation of God’s glory.
And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, โ€œMy Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.โ€ Mathew 26:39
