THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN YOUR LIFE.
Very little is spoken of the Holy Spirit and part of it, in my opinion, is because people do not know how to relate to Him. They also don’t want to grieve the Holy Spirit because we all know that this sin is unforgivable. And because we lack the knowledge of how to relate with Him, we avoid Him altogether. This, however, should not be how we should live. This is because when we avoid the Holy Spirit, we avoid the most important part of our lives. When Jesus ascended to heaven He sent us the Holy Spirit to be our guide and helper. The Holy Spirit always wants to commune with us, though. Jesus sent Him to us so that He could be our teacher, comforter, and helper. This clearly proves that He is essential in our walk as believers.
The Holy Spirit is part of the Holy Trinity. He existed before creation, as seen in Genesis 1; we are told that He hovered around the waters
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Genesis 1:1-2 NIV
The Holy Spirit was part of the creation of the world. He also was part of man’s creation, and He is the One who gave breath to us.
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:26-27 NIV
Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7 NIV
So it is the breath of the Holy Spirit that was infused in you.
The role of The Holy Spirit in your lives
The Holy Spirit is your teacher
In moments when you do not know what to say, The Holy Spirit will give you the right words. Have you ever been in a situation where you did not know what you wanted to say? Have there been times when the right word came into your mind at the right time? This is usually the Holy Spirit at work.
Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
Mark 13:11 NIV
You gave your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and you gave them water for their thirst.
Nehemiah 9:20 NIV
Nehemiah 9:20 tells us that God gives us His Good Spirit to instruct us. So let me ask you this, do you need to learn more about God? He can teach you, He wants to reveal to you the mysteries.
Sometimes a friend will call you for advice and once the conversation is over, they tell you how what you told them was exactly what they needed. That was the Holy Spirit telling you what to say. He knows what you and the other person need. So He will use you to encourage someone else at their worst times. And in obeying Him and following His lead, you get to become a vessel that He can use. So as you can see, He always has our back. He does not just leave us to figure things out on our own. He wants to direct your step, and He is more than ready to help you.
Ever heard a light bulb moment where it seems like you have everything finally figured out? Shocker! That was the Holy Spirit. He also will lead you to watch, listen to, or even call someone where you will find your answer to something that was bothering you. The Holy Spirit can teach you through Him, leading you to people who will convey the message so you can understand.
He is your helper.
The Holy Spirit empowers you to live a holy life and convicts you when you are wrong. There is always that small, still voice that warns us when we are about to do something wrong. It is not your sixth sense; it is Him- The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is always rooting for you. And because He does not want you to perish, He will give you the nudge that you need to move in the right direction.
He also gives you the words to say when you pray. If during prayer you find yourself at a loss for words, ask the Holy Spirit, and He will be more than willing to give you the right words. He also intercedes for us with groanings that no man can understand. This helps us in our Christian journey, as through His intercession we can stand strong when faced with temptations or impossible situations. On our own, we would never make it. But because we have the Holy Spirit, He empowers us to be strong.
Prayer is one way that you and I get to commune with God. Although we might not know this, it is the Holy Spirit that gives us the desire to pray. It is not in our nature to want to pray. That is why we need the Holy Spirit to help us and show us when and how to pray. You don’t have to wonder what to say in prayer. You can ask the Holy Spirit for guidance and He will help you by giving you the right words to say.
Human patience, love, self-control, and peace are not enough. That is why He gives us the Fruit of The Holy Spirit. Some things come so easily to you now that were a struggle as an unbeliever. They did not just come automatically; He is the One who instilled them in you. Maybe you were patient before, but when you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you, you get empowered even more to exercise patience on a greater level. It is in Him you get empowered to live a Christian life. The HOLY Spirit will help you in your journey to living a righteous life.
He is your assurance
Jesus gave the Holy Spirit to us to act as an engagement ring, as a promise of our union as His bride- the church with Him as the Bridegroom. The reason you are sure of your sonship and authority as a believer is through Him. First, we know God gave Him to us as a seal and promise of heaven. With Him in you, regardless of what the world says, you are sure that heaven is a guarantee. This then helps you to keep firm in your belief, even when things get tough. He gives you the strength to keep pushing. With all that Paul went through, He did not waver in His Faith and that is because the Holy Spirit was with Him. There is no way he would have made it through. Especially in moments when he was sent to prison for preaching the Gospel.
The Holy Spirit also assures you of your sonship as a child of God. How will you believe in God and Jesus when you don’t have the Holy Spirit? He is the One who gives you that confidence.
You, however, are not in the flesh’s realm but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him, we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Romans 8:9-11, 13-16 NIV
The Holy Spirit gives us gifts to help us in the walk as Christians;
- He gives the Gift of Prophesy when He wants to reveal mysteries on earth and God’s plan for you and me. Thus, He acts as a go-between between us and God.
- The Holy Spirit also gives the Gift of tongues. This helps you in praying God’s perfect will for you and thus perfect prayers.
- He also imparts the Gift of Faith to help you believe in the impossible. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for and evidence of things unseen. Before you can walk on the promises that God has for you, have faith to believe for them. Abraham had faith that he would get a son because God told him. He stood on God’s promise despite his and his wife’s old age, and that required faith.
We can thus conclude that we cannot ignore the Holy Spirit anymore. So I want to encourage you to seek Him out. Intentionally create time and commune with Him. Since He already lives inside of you, He will answer you immediately. He will never mislead you, let Him lead you.
How then can you partner with the Holy Spirit?
Now that you know all these, I am sure you would like to know how you can partner with Him. And the first step is surrender.
Have a relationship with Jesus.
The Holy Spirit only lives inside those that have a relationship with Jesus. And having a relationship with God comes from believing that Jesus Christ is lord and confessing with your mouth the same. That is how you receive the gift of salvation. You see, Jesus already paid the price, so all you get to do is receive Him.
The minute you do, you will receive the Holy Spirit. And that is how your journey with Him begins. But it does not end there. Once you have received Him, you need to cultivate a relationship with Him.
Yield to Him.
Yielding to the Holy Spirit starts with you getting to know Jesus And the best place to start is by reading the Bible. He will only be revealed in the pages of the Bible. As you learn more about Jesus, you get to activate the power of the Holy Spirit which flows out of your innermost being. Understanding the Bible gives you a clear picture of the role of the Holy Spirit and this enables you to partner with Him.
As you yield you become aware of his voice and His ways. The Holy Spirit will never contradict the word of God or the nature of God. He only reveals his nature and will.
The importance of reading the Bible is that you get to know what is expected of you in your Christian wall. And as you discover the truth, the Holy Spirit will remind you when you go astray. So yield to Him through reading the word.
Spend time with Him.
Have moments where you spend with the Holy Spirit. Just set time aside to be still and quiet before Him. Initially, it will feel weird. But the more you sunder to Him, the more you get to hear from Him. Spending time with Him also increases your sensitivity to hearing His voice. Philip could discern when the Holy Spirit guided him to the Ethiopian Centurion. And He wants to guide you too. He wants to give you moment-by-moment directions. But for you to hear Him correctly, make time for Him.
Obedience.
Hearing the voice of the Holy Spirit will not help you if you don’t follow what He says. It is imperative that you follow what He tells you. He will not speak again until you follow the last thing He said. What has the Holy Spirit spoken to you?
Conclusion.
The Holy Spirit wants to be your friend. He wants to guide you and help you walk with you every step of the way. With this in mind, I want to encourage you to make Him a part of your life. You don’t have to do these things alone. Give Him the chance to be your friend. He wants to. And He is more patient than you are sinful. There is a beautiful Christian journey ahead of you. But the key is for you to live a surrendered life.
