3 Powerful Reasons Why God Gives You A Promise.

Estimated reading time: 10 minutes

It is important to understand why God gives you a promise. This is because you might take it lightly when it is meant to anchor you in moments of despair. God does not give you a promise for His sake. It is for your benefit. This is because He understands that as human beings, we are prone to growing weary easily. And therefore He will send you a word that will help you when it looks like God Is delaying. Or when the schemes of the enemy bombard you with thoughts of God’s word never coming to pass.

I don’t know about you, but looking at Abraham’s story makes me question my patience level. God gave Abraham a promise at 75 years and He fulfilled it at 100 years. That’s 25 years of waiting until actual manifestation.

Not to forget Joseph, who had a dream at 17 years, only for it to be fulfilled at 30 years. David too waited for 10+ years before he ever became king.

It then begs the question, why would God give you a promise if the said promise would take years (seems more like centuries to me) to come to pass? Why can’t He just let you live your life only to stumble upon the said promise when it is manifestation time? This is what I want us to talk about today.

3 powerful reasons why God gives you a promise.

To get you to align with the said promise.

Think about this: had God not made the promise to Abraham, would he have partnered with God to become the Father of many nations? He probably wouldn’t, because he would not even know if that was possible for him. After all, he did not have any kids. So that would have looked like an impossible situation.

When God gives you a promise, He is giving you a chance to partner with where He wants to take you. He wants you to prepare for where He is taking you. Think about this: it is easier to partner with God when He tells you He will elevate you than when you don’t have a clue. In some ways, you will start acting differently. Even when you grow weary in the waiting, you will avoid compromising because there is a part of you that believes God might do just what He said He would do.

Although Abraham had moments of despair, deep down, he believed God would do it. Maybe that was why he never saw the need to get another wife. Of course, at some point, he had a child through Hagar.. But even that was Sarah’s idea, not his. He still believed that God would do it for him although the promise had to get to come to pass.

The same goes for you. When God gives you a promise, it is an invitation to step into the person worthy of carrying that promise. If God has called you to leadership, you will find that you will embrace taking responsibility and checking yourself when you get out of character. Joseph after receiving the promise from God started acting like a leader. Of course, at the time, his leadership was rooted in pride. Still, he acted in accordance with what he knew God had told him. He made his brothers take responsibility for his actions when they error by telling them to their father.

Even after he was sold as a slave, he acted with integrity at Portiphars’ place. He also took time to tend to other people’s needs despite his own predicament. That was why he interpreted the butler and baker’s dream.

This, my friend, is why God Gives you a promise. Some ways you might partner with the dream God gave you are by.

  • Taking leadership classes or reading books on leadership.
  • Learning what it takes to become a wife and a mother if God is calling you to that. When God gives you a promise, it will pique your interest. And in so doing, get you to want to research it. After all, you have that assurance that what God told you would come to pass. And when you are guaranteed of it, why won’t you partner with it by learning what needs to be learned?
  • You might take courses that align with that promise God gave you. You could even decide to get mentorship to prepare you for your next season. Sometimes you will not understand what you are doing. You might even feel ridiculous for going in on a promise. But because the Holy Spirit is leading you, you will keep going anyway. Just imagine what Moses must have felt trying to talk to Pharaoh, who wouldn’t relent. At some point, he thought it best if he never acted on what God had told him. But despite the many setbacks, he will show up whenever God sent Him to Pharaoh. And the reason for this was the promise that God had given him. And the promise was that he would deliver the Israelites from slavery.

To confirm that your desire is from God.

Abraham always had the desire to have a child. Joseph always desired leadership. And Moses always wanted to deliver the Israelites. That was why he killed the Egyptian to save the Israelites. You see, it was always inside him. He did not even understand what it meant or what that would look like. However, it was clear God had placed that desire there. Hannah always had that desire to be a mother, although God had closed her womb.

What I am getting at is that sometimes, because of an unfulfilled desire, we might think it will ever happen to us. Maybe you have a desire for financial freedom. It could look like you are getting a job or you starting your own business. But because currently, none has worked out you think that maybe financial freedom is not your portion. But what I want to challenge you with could it be that the very reason you Harbour those dreams inside you and you can’t seem to relent is that they came from God.

Could it be the enemy is sending warfare your way because he wants you to doubt it is possible for you? Judging from the Bible characters, the enemy will attack every area God called you to. Therefore, if your purpose involves you being a kingdom financier, the enemy will attack that area to make you think you got it all wrong.

When God gives you a promise, He wants to confirm to you that you were not wrong for desiring that thing. Of course, I would like to point out that God’s promises will always align with His word and character.

In Proverbs, the Bible tells us to delight ourselves in the Lord and He will fulfill the desires of our hearts. When the Shunamite woman housed Elisha and his servant, she received the manifestation of her desire. Mind you, she had been childless for such a long time.

Think about this: God has the power to refine that desire to align with His will. Therefore, today I want to encourage you to bring to God that desire you have. Who knows? He might confirm to you it came from Him.

Your financial freedom will help others be encouraged to persevere and not compromise because God does it for you will be a testament that He can do it for them. Therefore, your desiring financial freedom is a good thing. After all, in the book of 1 Timothy, tells us THAT God gives us things for our enjoyment. He is a good Father after all. Why would He not want to see us experience freedom financially and live a life of abundance?
As for the rich in this present world, instruct them not to be conceited and arrogant, nor to set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly and ceaselessly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. (1 Timothy 5:16)

Influence is a good thing too. Think about this, Esther used her influence to save the Jews from being annihilated. Joseph helped his family live in Goshen because he had the power to do so. They were treated so well, did not starve, and were given a fertile place to live in. Imagine that. Foreigners are given the very best.

That is the power of influence and authority. Joseph of Arimathea could convince Pilate to give him Jesus’ body for burial. There are moments in life where influence will be what changes a situation. And having a desire for that is not bad. Ask God to refine it so that it does not destroy you in the end.

Today I would like to encourage you not to feel ashamed of having some desires you do. It is possible that the desire came from God. And you might be surprised that when God gives you a promise, He gives you one that aligns with the very desire you have harbored for years.

When God gives you a promise, He wants you to use that promise as an anchor when life’s circumstances contradict it.

The enemy will only contradict God’s word. The enemy will board you with thoughts to Mae you doubt God’s word. And that is why anchoring on the promise God gave you is the key to surviving the waiting season. Can you imagine the many times Joseph might have thought his dream would never come to pass?

Especially when he was in prison. He must have thought he would never see his family again. And maybe he thought he would do it in prison. But in the end, God fulfilled what He had promised him. And every dream he had manifested in the physical realm. I can only imagine what his brothers must have felt when they remembered the dream he had told them 13 years prior.

When God gives you a promise, He wants you to allow it to anchor you in moments of despair. There will be times when your environment will look contrary to what God has spoken of you. In fact, it will look like what He said was a far-fetched dream.

In those moments, I want to encourage you to remember the promise God gave you. It will help you hold on amidst the delay and confusion. God knows the enemy will try to make you lose hope and doubt Him. But when you allow the dream to anchor you, you find that even amid the doubts, you will have the faith to believe. Joseph kept the dream close to his heart, even when his situation seemed contradictory. Abraham still believed, even when it seemed like the promise was taking too long to come to pass.

Conclusion

When God gives you a promise, He does so to remind you He will fulfill it even though it might tarry. God understands that as human beings, we grow weary and lose hope fast. And to get us to have something to hold on to, He will give us a promise.

Maybe God gave you a promise that has yet to come to pass. Maybe you had given up on it entirely. Today, I want to encourage you to pick it back up again. I want to tell you to believe again. He who promised is faithful to bring it to pass. He is not governed by time. It does not matter how late you think it is, God will bring it to pass. He does not give a promise He can’t fulfill. And He is not a man they He should lie.

The promise He gave you was not empty. It will surely come to pass. Hold on to what God told you. And do what needs to be done. It is coming. Who knows? You could be an hour away from the manifestation of your promise. What God promised you will come to pass. That is a guarantee.
