Mental overload definition.
This is when the mind becomes overwhelmed by excessive thought, emotions, responsibilities and information making it difficult to think clearly, make decisions or hear God’s voice. It happens when your mental and emotional capacity is exceeded. That is when what you are carrying internally outweighs what your mind can process peacefully.
Psychologically this occurs when your working memory and attention are stretched beyond their limit. Essentially your mind is trying to solve everything at once.
Spiritually mental overload is what happens when your thoughts become louder than God’s voice. You may find yourself confusing inner dialogue with divine direction, trying to figure out what God meant instead of resting in what He said and feeling distant from His presence because your mind is noisy.
In summary, mental overload is the congestion of the mind that blurs discernment, drains peace, and blocks renewal
Signs of mental overload.
The main cause is striving without surrender where you
- Feel like everything depends on you. You find yourself carrying burdens that belong to God? For as long as you continue thinking about other people’s needs and suppressing your own, mental overload will become a part of your life.
- keep thinking through pain instead of healing, your mind stores emotional clutter. This occurs when you constantly replay conversations, over-analyze decisions and relive disappointments. Emotional residue clogs the mind blocking peace and pressure.
- Constant stimulation through avenues like social media through mindless scrolling causes the mind to absorb without need for rest
- Misalignment of focus causes the mind to focus on what is urgent instead of what is important. You think about outcome instead of presence and control replaces trust.
Before I embarked on the journey of becoming, I experienced mental overload. My mind was always foggy. In fact I had a very difficult time concentrating or even finishing the simplest of tasks. Life in general lost meaning and it became a chore. I was just exhausted. And it did not matter how long I slept, I still woke up tired. I however reached a point where i said enough was enough. I wanted better for myself and knew that I would do whatever it took to get there.
That was when God intervened. We know that God did not call us to live that way. He has a better way, a way of freedom. God wants you to live knowing that you don’t have to experience mental overload because He already paid that price. And so we will look at how to go from mental overload to mind reset. And to help us do that we will look at the story of Moses.
The Story of Moses
Moses struggled with limiting beliefs and mindsets that held him back from becoming who God created him to be.
The backstory is that Moses was born at a time when the Pharaoh commanded that the Hebrew male children be killed at birth. Fortunately his mother used a unique strategy to spare his life . This caused him to end up in the palace after being adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. Isn’t it interesting that God uses the things meant to cause you harm as your shield and protection. That wilderness you loathe is your place of preservation. Anyway, I digress.
Pharaoh’s daughter also hired Moses’ mother as his nurse at the request of his sister Miriam. Because of this, Moses got the chance to learn about his people and his culture. So much so that when he got older his passion to deliver his people was ignited. Unfortunately, he failed miserably and was rejected by the people he was called to deliver. This rejection led him to the wilderness and for 40 years he stayed in Midian tending to sheep.
This was until God intervened. God encountered Moses and by the time He was done with him, Moses’ mind had been renewed. When it comes to mind reset, God’s framework stems from a place of rest. It is not what the world expects. Especially because we tend to focus more on doing than becoming. Anyway without further ado, let us get into the frameworks for mind reset.
Framework for Mind Reset.
Divine Interruption is The First Key for Mind Reset.
In Exodus 3 verse 1-3, the Bible shows us how God interrupted Moses’ schedule. God used the mundane to bring the supernatural. It was through the burning bush in the middle of the wilderness that God encountered Moses. However it is also good to note that Moses had come to the mountain of God
To bring this back home, the interruption will come through a leading. You will find out that you are suddenly drawn to the things of God. You begin questioning your life and also your way of thinking. Suddenly you find that you are even questioning how you have been doing things and even your belief system. This is God’s way of getting your attention. You will also begin acknowledging the supernatural and divine subconsciously.
Have you been feeling an urge to draw closer to God. Has your mental overload made you recognize your need for God? Are you now looking for solutions beyond you to deal with the mental exhaustion? If this is you then you could be experiencing the divine interruption that leads to your freedom.
Some of the questions you will start asking yourself include:
- Is this all there is to life?
- Will I ever get to a place of freedom
- How can I stop overthinking?
- When will I stop allowing situations and people define me?
When this happens, I want to encourage you to lean in as this will get you to the next step which is the holy pause.
Holy and Divine Pause as a key for Mind Reset.
In verse 4-7, Moses encountered God in a way that caused him to draw his attention back to God. He went from focusing on self to focusing on the sacred. He revered God by removing his sandals and also hiding his face. The recognition of the sacredness of God is key on your journey to becoming through mind reset. When your eyes are fixed on God you experience a level of rest that allows you to actually have a conversation with God.
Until the mind can relax, you will not be able to focus on God. In that moment, Moses literally forgot about self and focused on God who was speaking. To bring this back home, I want you to know that this holy pause will come in form of acknowledging God’s supernatural power and Sovereignty. You will find that you can easily give God glory for the things He can do. You become mesmerized by His power. And suddenly the testimonies you used to ignore become something you feed on.
You will find out that you want to listen to people who have been delivered from limiting beliefs and negative mindset. You will also recognize the power of God in doing so. It is also interesting to note that although Moses acknowledged God’s power, he had a difficult time believing what God was saying concerning him as we will see in the next verses.
Some of the key indicators include:
- A desire to read about other people who experienced healing and wholeness
- A desire to listen to testimonies about others who God delivered from mental exhaustion and overload
- The desire to read the Bible and find out what God says about mind reset
- An awareness that you need the help of God.
The Conversation as a mind reset key
The next step is the conversation between you and God. God will remind you of your identity. He will show you who you are created to be and who He knows you to be. Looking at the conversation starter, God revealed to Moses that he was sent and that he was a leader. Remember that 40 years prior, Moses had tried to deliver the Israelites only to be rejected. Now God was telling him that the very thing he had failed at the time was what He wanted him to embark on. No wonder Moses’ hesitation. Let me ask you this, has God been resurrecting old dreams?
Some of the ways this conversation will look like is
- God will resurrect old desires. All of a sudden you will remember dreams and prayers you used to pray
- There will be a desire and unction to revisit old ideas.
- You will find yourself thinking about opportunities that you lost and wonder how life would have looked like if things had succeeded then.
- What you are currently doing will feel mundane. Routine will become boring and frustrating.
- God might give you dreams of the call He has over you
- Biblical characters that embody a similar grace as you will become highlighted as you read the word.
The goal of this conversation is to address the limiting beliefs and mindsets holding you back. God will use this conversation to confront the false beliefs and help you on your mind reset journey. So what are the mindsets that God addressed when talking to Moses?
1. Moses believed that he was not enough
Because the Israelites had rejected him in the past, Moses allowed their rejection to define him. That was why God calling him a leader did not make sense. This is actually interesting seeing that everything he had been through would qualify him as a leader. But that one incident of rejection caused Moses to doubt who God said he was. Obviously we know that this had a lot to do with timing since it was only year 390 and the Israelites had 10 more years to go before God could deliver them from bondage. This was based on the conversation God had with Abraham.
But notice how God responded. He reminded Moses that the reason he failed 40 years ago was that he tried to do it in his own strength. This time though God promised that He would be with him. The limiting mindset that gives you the wrong identity can only be silenced by the awareness that God is with you. Let me ask you this, have you allowed the past failures to define you? Has rejection caused you to believe that you are a rejected person? Today I want you to remember that God is with you. And because He is, you are no longer a rejected person. When God’s presence is with you, He empowers you for your calling. And because of that the same people who rejected you in the past will accept you.
Signs that you are dealing with false identity.
- Allowing your past to define you and labeling yourself based on your past failures and mistakes.
- The inability to look past your mistakes
- Isolating yourself and settling for less than you know you deserve
- Dimming your light around people
- Not speaking up in situations you know you should.
2. Moses doubted God’s identity
Once God had dealt with the identity mindset, Moses now brought up the fact that he did not know who was sending him. He was trying to disqualify himself by claiming that he did not know enough to convince the Israelites that he had actually been sent by God. He doubted his ability to hear from God. In your case this might come up as you discounting what you think God is telling you. You might find yourself doubting that God would speak to you. Maybe you don’t feel holy enough for God to speak to you. Or maybe it is easier for you to discount it because in the past you thought you heard God only to end up in shame.
Either way, this lie will cause you not to act on what God is saying because you will doubt His voice. Or maybe you don’t think that God is powerful enough to actually be with you and help you succeed in your calling. And Moses having grown up in Egypt where the people there had different gods to serve different needs, he must have doubted God’s sufficiency.
But notice God’s response. He told Moses that ”I AM”. The reason God said this was to remind Him that He was all sufficient. He wanted Moses to know that as long as God was on his side, he did not need to look for any other god. The same goes for you, God wants you to know that He is ll sufficient. This means that whatever you need He has it all. You don’t need to operate outside of Him.
Ways this mindset materializes.
- Thinking that you need to help God
- Doubting that God can do what He said He would do
- Doubting your ability to hear God
How to squash this mindset is by meditating on the fact that God is all sufficient. Everything you need is in Him. And as long as you are in Him, you are guaranteed success.
3. The insignificant mindset
This time Moses argued that the people would not believe him. He felt insignificant. By now the confidence he had had been stripped because of living in the wilderness for 40 years. He no longer believed he had the abilities he had. Maybe he thought he had lost his groove. He might have wondered how people would believe him if they doubted him when he was at his peak.
Again God responded by telling him that this time God would back his words with signs and wonders. God was willing to help him. It wasn’t Moses’ job to do the convincing, God would do that. After all Proverbs 21 reminds us that God has the ability to turn the hearts of kings like the streams of water. Today I want to encourage you by saying, if you feel insignificant or are discouraged by the fact that they did not listen the first time, I want you to know that God can change how people perceive you. It is not your job to convince them. Your part is to do what God is saying. Let God do the rest.
Signs of an insignificant mindset
- Fear of rejection
- People-pleasing
- Feeling the need to seek validation
- Following the status-quo when God has called you to stand out
- Not feeling credible enough
4. Moses doubted his capabilities. He did not think he had what it took to fulfill his calling.
Moses again argued that he was not eloquent enough to talk to Pharaoh or the Israelites. He doubted his ability to convey the message accurately. It is interesting how he brought up what he thought was his truth. Yet in the book of Acts the Bible describes him as an eloquent man. Could it be that he only viewed himself that way because in the past he had been rejected and he probably thought that his inability to convey the message was the reason he was rejected? Or maybe he was actually a stammerer but in the end God healed him from that. Whatever the reason was, God had a solution for it.
God responded by reminding Him that He was well able to heal him from his slow speech and give him the ability to be eloquent. Isn’t it cool to know that God has the ability to give you the power to articulate yourself how you need to so that the message can be received as it need to. Moses thought that his weakness disqualified him. God however wanted to use him in-spite of his weaknesses.
Some of of the ways that the mindset of inadequacy manifests.
- Self-silencing- This is where you hold your voice for fear of saying the wrong thing
- Overthinking communication- You doubt your words, tone and timing
- Comparison- You imagine that others are more qualified than you
- Perfectionism- The need to feel ready before stepping out
- Fear of visibility- You shrink from public speaking, leadership and confrontation
When you feel inadequate I want you to remember that God’s grace is sufficient in your weakness. He will se you in spite of your weakness. And sometimes what you perceive as weakness or failure is the very thing that qualifies you. You don’t need to be perfect to be used. All God wants is a willing heart. He qualifies the unqualified.
Have you noticed the theme in these 4 mindset breaking patterns? Not once did God tell Moses to do something in His own strength. In every instance, God reminded Moses that He would work through Him. All He wanted Moses to do was to show up. This goes to show that when it comes to mind reset, the key is to set your eyes on God. He is the one who will help you break those limiting beliefs. When you are with Him and when He is on your side, the guarantee is that you will win. Your identity is intact in Him. And He has the capability to swallow your insufficiency and weaknesses.
The resistance as a key of Mind reset
Even after all this, Moses went on to resist. This time however he had no comeback seeing that God had dealt with all the insecurities. It was his flesh trying to resist the new. He wanted to remain in his comfort zone. God had other plans. Even after God has dealt with the mindsets, you might find that the old you wants to keep you stuck. The new can be scary especially if you have failed in the past. All these questions and scenarios of the past might pop up. However for the mind reset to be perfected, you will need to overcome this hurdle of resistance and allow God to finish the work He started in you. And the secret is to lean in and allow the new mindset to take root. Rest in the truth of what God said.
How resistance manifests
- A desire to go back to the old
- Feeling the need to remain in the comfort zone
- Doubting what God has already spoken to you
- Thinking someone else is more capable than you
- Allowing your insufficiency to define you even after knowing the truth that God is enough
- Battling the new and old mindsets at the same time
- The devil constantly reminding you of your past and your failures
The final key as a part of the Mind reset is surrender
After all these Moses eventually said yes. He accepted God’s call and even went to ask Jethro his father in law to release him so he could go and visit his people. Once you get to this point, you no longer resist or strive. You simply allow God to define you and give you an identity. You no longer allow your past to define you, rather you rest in the truth of who God says He is and who He says you are.
It is a this point that you experience that mind reset that allows God’s truth to replace the lies and remain anchored in your brain. When you get to this point, the devil loses his power over you because you have won the battle of the mind. This is the greatest battle you will ever face on your journey to becoming. After all, it is who you think you are that you are. When your mind reflects God’s mind, you no longer have false mindsets or limiting beliefs holding you back. It is at this point that you recognize God’s power and ability. And you finally rest in Him.
Signs that you have surrendered
- Resting in God’s truth
- Allowing God to define you
- Breaking free from people-pleasing
- Saying yes to God unreservedly
- Excitement for the future
Final Charge
I hope you now recognize that mind reset happens when you focus on God. It is not about doing but resting in His truth. The summary of it all is that in order for you to go from mental overload to mind reset you need to set your gaze on Jesus. As you do that you will realize that He sis with you, He is enough and that He is well all sufficient. This means that when you are with Him, you have everything you need. and all your inadequacies and weaknesses will be swallowed by Him.
Before you leave, I have a workbook that will help you work through the mind reset framework. Don’t forget to engage with the workbook and allow the Holy Spirit to minister to you through the pages.
Until next time, I want you to remember that God can be trusted. I would love to hear from you. Let me know what spoke to you and some of the things you will put to practice. See you next time.
